The “A” series engine dates back to the 1940s and found fame in the Morris Minor. Designed by Alec Issigonis in the late 1940s the Minor was the first british car to sell over a million units. Not one to rest on his laurels Alec Issigonis went on to design the Mini. The first mini prototypes used a 948cc engine mounted transversally. To reduce power and increase smoothness the engine was later reduced to 848cc and it is this that went into production in the first Mini Minor of 1959 (621 AOK).

The mini was an obvious choice for a competition car and was quickly embraced by Abingdon, the competition department of BMC. John Cooper, the legendary racer and engine tuner became involved and the Mini Cooper was born. Various engine sizes followed to meet class restrictions in races and rallies and these filtered down into the production market. BMC quickly capitalised on the Mini’s success in races and rallies and released road-going versions of its famous competition cars.

Over its life the Mini was produced with 848, 970, 997, 998, 1071, 1098, & 1275cc "A" series engines. Our unique Hoody pays a graphical homage to the A series motor that has powered every mini built.
