VHK 47S Ford went to the 1979 Monte Carlo Rally all out to win, and break the Fiat - Lancia dominance of the past decade. To achieve this they commissioned some very special Escorts. With clever interpretation of the rules they built an ultra light tarmac special Group 4 escort certainly capable of wining the event, and later known as "The Monte Escort". A good start for Mikkola and Waldegard saw fords holding the first two positions, but events were to take on a dramatic turn. (This is the Monte Carlo Rally. Remember the antics of 1966?). The ford pairing were 5 minutes in front of the third place man when Mikkola was penalised for an alleged traffic infringement, and Waldegard encountered rocks in the road blocking his passage, believed to have been placed by French fans to slow the Escort down. The event was won by Bernard Darniche (France) in a Lancia Stratos (Italy). Significant don't you think?
