GRX 555D is the car that Timo Makinen & Paul Easter used to win the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally. Carrying the number 2 this 1275cc Mini Cooper S acheived a third mini monte victory. A very famous car but that is not all, Rauno Aaltonen finished in second position and Paddy Hopkirk in third making it a Mini 1,2,3, and in fourth place was another all British team of Roger Clark and Jim Porter in a Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1. This was just too much for the organisers and the trouble began. The cars were stripped down and painstakingly scrutinised to find any evidence of cheating. The only point that could be found was that the lighting system didn’t quite comply with French law. A point that didn't help them win the rally but one that gave the organisers the right to disqualify all three Mini’s, Clarks Ford, and Rosemary Smith in the Imp, handing victory to Pauli Toivonan in a Citroen DS21. Significant don’t you think?
