Mercedes built the beautiful 300 SLR (W196S) to tackle the 1955 sportscar championship. It enjoyed much success in road and circuit racing and famously won the 1955 Mille Miglia road race driven by Sir Sirling Moss, partnered by motoring journalist Denis Jenkinson. Over the 1000 mile race they averaged a staggering 97.96 mph. Denis "Jenks" Jenkinson used a clever system of pre made route notes on a scrolling paper to call out the road ahead and were a forerunner of the "pacenote" system that is used on modern stage rallies.
In the skilled hands of Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio the car was very successful. As well as the famous Mille Miglia victory the car clinched the 1955 sportscar championship for manufacturers.
The successes were however overshadowed when a 300 SLR driven by Pierre Levegh crashed whilst in the lead at the 1955 Le Mans 24 hour race leaving the circuit and crashing into the packed grandstand. 82 spectators, and one competitor - Levegh - lost their lives in what remains the highest-fatality accident in the history of motorsport. Following this tragedy, Mercedes withdrew from competitive motorsport until the mid-1980s.
This car driven by Juan Manuel Fangio (no.658) finished 2nd in the 1955 Mille Miglia, behind Moss.
