Renault Alpine A110 Canvas Wrap 04

The Renault Alpine A110 was a purpose built rally car derived from a Renault Dauphine, and built by “Alpine”. It is a 2 seater rear engined sports car and has a steel tube chassis and fibre glass body designed by Italian styling house Bertone. Initially the car was powered by a small capacity engines from just less than 1000cc. This rose to 1600cc and the car was homologated into Group 4 and made its debut on the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally.

In 1972 engine capacity was increased to 1800cc and power levels raised. Unfortunately this proved too much for the gearbox and drivetrain and reliability was an issue.

By 1973 reliability issues had been largely ironed out and the car was really on form taking outright wins in Monte Carlo, Portugal, Greece, Sanremo, and Corsica and showing it was more than a match for the competition from BMC, Ford, Lancia and Porsche.

These cars are tiny, quirky, and very beautiful. The original blue and yellow “works” colour scheme accentuates the shape of the Bertone styled body and they certainly look "built for purpose". With its low slung exhaust spanning the rear of the car and raucous roar from twin 45 DCOE’S the sight and sound of one being driven as it was intended is a unique spectacle!

Photographer and long time car enthusiast Marcus Pomfret caught up with this amazing car at Carfest South 2013.
